What is Operation Encompass?

Operation Encompass is a national scheme that operates jointly between police forces and educational settings. It ensures that notifications are sent to schools and nurseries prior to the start of the next school day whenever a child has experienced or been exposed to an incident of domestic abuse.

What is Berry Lane Nursery's role in the scheme?

As an educational setting caring for children from age two, we receive confidential notifications from the police. This allows our trained Designated Safeguarding Lead (Key Adult) to put immediate, gentle support in place for the child throughout their day at nursery.

Who receives and handles the information at nursery?

Information shared through Operation Encompass is handled in strict confidence by our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), known as the Key Adult. They have received dedicated training in Operation Encompass procedures to ensure all sensitive details are managed securely.

What does the law say about Operation Encompass?

The Domestic Abuse Act 2021 formally recognised children who witness or experience domestic abuse as victims in their own right. Furthermore, on 24th May 2024, Royal Assent was granted to the Victims and Prisoners Act, placing Operation Encompass into law and establishing a statutory obligation for police forces to notify educational settings.
